Designing for Generations, Rooted in Place
At Z Group Architecture & Interior Design, we don’t just design homes—we craft legacies. As Aspen’s longest-standing architecture firm, founded in 1952, we've helped families across the Rockies and beyond create residences that honor tradition, elevate lifestyle, and welcome every generation.
Our multi-generational mountain homes are structures for gathering, places where privacy and togetherness coexist, where nature is a partner in design, and where time slows for meals, milestones, and memory-making.
In the homes below—Dulcinea, Elysium, Ikigai, Shadow Mountain Residence, and Strata House—you’ll see how we bring legacy, landscape, and lifestyle into lasting harmony.
Dulcinea: An Urban Gem with a Soulful Core
In Aspen’s historic West End, Dulcinea transforms a compact site into a luminous, livable family home. Its wing-like rooflines and glass-lined interiors open to mountain views, connecting the home to its natural and cultural surroundings.
As featured in Luxe Interiors + Design Magazine, “this home seamlessly blends natural hues, sustainable materials, and interiors deeply inspired by the natural world.”
Dulcinea is ideal for families who gather seasonally. It balances privacy with openness, offering a feeling of sanctuary while remaining connected to community.
Elysium: 36 Acres of Celebration and Stillness
Elysium sits on 36 private acres in the Elk Mountain Range—designed for reflection, celebration, and enduring presence. With retractable glass walls, open terraces, and a linear floor plan that echoes the terrain, this residence invites the outdoors in.
According to Mountain Living Magazine, “boundaries between the living and outdoor spaces blur with the surroundings and create a visceral luxury mountain experience.
Whether hosting a wedding, a family reunion or a quiet weekend with loved ones, Elysium sets the stage for connection at every scale.
Ikigai: Designing with Intention and Tranquility
Rooted in the Japanese concept of “ikigai”—a life of purpose—this Aspen home was envisioned as a modern sanctuary for a large family. With space for sixteen guests, Ikigai blends Zen-inspired simplicity with meaningful connection.
From a lower-level family room and bunk room for grandchildren to spa-like outdoor spaces, the architecture supports gathering and solitude in equal measure. Natural materials and layered textures create warmth, while solar panels, green roofs, and high-efficiency systems deliver sustainable luxury.
Shadow Mountain Residence: Living with the Mountain
Located at the foot of Shadow Mountain in Aspen, this award-winning residence reflects both drama and restraint. With en‑suite retreats for each family member and expansive indoor‑outdoor living areas, the home encourages both retreat and reunion. The butterfly roof mirrors the surrounding peak, while floor-to-ceiling glass frames the alpine terrain.
This recipient of the 2024 Luxe Red Award for Regional Exterior Architecture is multi-generational architecture that honors the land and the people who live within it.
Strata House: Elevated Living for Every Generation
Strata House rises with the mountain slope—both literally and figuratively. Set into Aspen’s Mountain Laurel hillside, this home offers multi-level living that honors privacy while uniting the family through its shared social heart: the entertainer’s kitchen, living room, and panoramic terraces.
As praised in Colorado Homes & Lifestyles Magazine, “this single-family home in Aspen was designed by Z Group to welcome the outdoors in… the goal was how high could we go with that top floor? We literally couldn’t go any higher.”
Strata House is the 2022 Luxe Red Award for Regional Exterior Architecture. With an elevator, private wine room, fitness suite, and glass-framed bedrooms, Strata House is not just a marvel of engineering—it’s a multi-generational haven with soul.
Designing Legacy into the Landscape
Our approach to multi-generational mountain‑home design balances innovation, site sensitivity, and emotional resonance. Whether through aging‑in‑place considerations, flexible guest wings, or integrated nature retreats, we help families create homes that endure—not just structurally, but spiritually.
These homes aren’t just designed for now—they are crafted for legacy—to be lived in, loved, and passed on.

FAQ: Designing Multi-Generational Homes in Colorado’s Western Slope
What defines a multi-generational legacy home?
A multi-generational legacy home is intentionally designed to support several generations living, visiting, or gathering under one roof. These homes blend private spaces—such as guest suites, bunk rooms, or aging-in-place master suites—with shared zones like great rooms, kitchens, terraces, or wellness spaces.
At Z Group, we design homes that reflect each family's unique rhythm: from morning coffee on a quiet deck to family dinners, holiday celebrations, or cross-generational retreats. The result is a residence that fosters belonging across time, space, and age.
How do you ensure privacy and connection in one home?
We start with intentional spatial zoning—organizing the home around gradients of public, semi-private, and private spaces. For example, we may design a quiet suite for grandparents on one level, active bunk rooms for children on another, and central gathering spaces like kitchens or lounges that draw everyone together.
Acoustic separation, thoughtful circulation paths, outdoor nooks, and multi-use flex rooms all help support personal retreat while preserving opportunities for shared memory-making. It’s not just about square footage—it’s about emotional flow.
What makes a legacy home different from a traditional vacation home?
A legacy home is built to endure—both structurally and emotionally. While a vacation home may serve short-term needs, a legacy home is a long-term investment in family, heritage, and place. These residences are designed with deep intention, incorporating aging-in-place features, sustainable systems, timeless materials, and architectural gestures that honor landscape and memory.
In our process, we consider how the home will evolve over decades: how it will serve your grandchildren, host future celebrations, or be passed down as a cherished part of your family’s story.
How does Z Group translate our family's vision into design?
We begin with listening. Every family is different, and our design process is built around collaborative discovery. Through detailed interviews, site visits, storyboarding, and visioning workshops, we capture your values, needs, and aspirations—and translate them into architecture that reflects your lifestyle, identity, and goals.
For over 70 years, our work has been rooted in the understanding that great design starts with human connection. Your story is our blueprint.
