Ikigai
Modern Sanctuary | Single-Family Residence
Aspen, Colorado
Where Interior Design Finds Its Purpose
Rooted in the Japanese philosophy of ikigai—meaning “that which gives one’s life purpose”—this Aspen residence is a meditation on the quiet power of intentional design. Crafted by Z Group Architecture & Interior Design, in collaboration with Glinn Interiors, this home is a modern mountain sanctuary—elegant in restraint, rich in emotion, and expressive in texture.
Here, architecture and interior design operate in harmony to evoke stillness, connection, and timeless living. As featured in LUXE Interiors + Design, Senior Principal Seth Hmielowski shares, “Our aim was to create a house that breathes with the land—where there’s not a single room you enter without a view, a texture, or a feeling that connects you to place.”

A Space for Reflection, Crafted with Intention
The clients—a couple with deep appreciation for Japanese design principles—sought a home where serenity and vitality could coexist. The design team responded with an architecture that "breathes with the land," and an interior environment that echoes that same philosophy.
Every material and spatial gesture inside the home was designed to enhance the sensory experience. Interior designer Andrea Glinn brought layers of warmth and depth, building what LUXE Interiors + Design described as "a house built on restraint, but with room for tremendous emotional richness.”

Material Soul and Minimal Gesture
The interiors are grounded in natural, tactile materials that speak softly but resonate deeply. Every surface—textured wood, flamed stone, patinated steel—was chosen for its emotional presence and the way it engages light and shadow in both form and function.
Interior highlights include:
Flamed and tumbled stone flooring
Wire-brushed wood, cleft stone, and live-edge elements
Custom furnishings by artisans, including Matt Castilleja and Yucca Stuff
Woven wool textiles, silk lighting, and curated art from diverse voices
Bespoke millwork and layered lighting to define space without excess
Glinn’s palette of neutral earth tones and organic textures honors the Zen-inspired restraint, while shaping an environment that feels elevated, soulful, and utterly livable.
A Home for Gathering and Reflection
Built for connection across generations, the residence includes a primary suite, junior suite, two king guest rooms, and a bunk room with four queen beds—sleeping sixteen in total. A lower-level family room encourages movie nights and game play, while exterior features like the firepit and spa retreat invite stargazing and seasonal celebration.
The front porch faces Aspen’s active street life, while the backyard offers a hidden sanctuary—framing both community and retreat.
“Ikigai reminds us that true luxury is found not in excess, but in the quiet joy of intention realized.” — Seth Hmielowski, Senior Principal
