For more than 70 years, curiosity has helped us create meaningful places—and it continues to shape how we design for the future.

Great design begins with curiosity.

For more than 70 years, Z Group Architecture & Interior Design has embraced change while remaining grounded in what matters most: designing meaningful places for people. Since opening our doors in Aspen in 1952, we've evolved alongside the profession—from hand drafting and blueprints to digital modeling, sustainable design strategies, and today's emerging technologies.

The tools have changed.

Our commitment to thoughtful design, collaboration, and lifelong learning has not.

This summer, Senior Associate & Senior Architect Randy Henrie and Architectural Designer Max Hemmy traveled to AEC Innovate: The AI & Technology Strategies Summit in Las Vegas to explore how emerging technologies are influencing the future of architecture.

They returned with far more than new software ideas.

They came back with fresh perspective on what will always matter most.

Learning Is Part of Our Legacy

Architecture and interior design have never stood still.

Every generation has adapted to new materials, building systems, environmental priorities, and changing client expectations. Artificial intelligence is simply the latest chapter in that story.

For Max, the conference offered a chance to see how conversations already happening inside Z Group were unfolding across the industry.

"We have been exploring the impacts of AI on our industry, and the conference was the perfect place to see our findings in action. Many of the softwares and websites we had been looking into had a presence there as well." — Max Hemmy, Architectural Designer

Between keynote sessions, software demonstrations, and conversations with architects from across the country, one message kept resurfacing: the future won't belong to firms that adopt every new technology. It will belong to those who learn how to use it thoughtfully.

That idea resonated because it mirrors the way Z Group has always approached innovation.

Technology Doesn't Replace Great Architecture

One of Max's biggest takeaways had little to do with software.

Instead, it reaffirmed the value of the architect.

"AI will never be human. It does not 'know' things—it 'thinks.' It is a very good guesser. It is a tool for the human architect that can be used to our advantage. And the human architect will always have the greatest advantage—a connection to the people we design for." — Max Hemmy

That sentiment feels especially relevant at Z Group.

Every project begins long before drawings or renderings. It begins with conversations—understanding how a family lives, how guests experience a resort, how a community gathers, or how a building should respond to the surrounding landscape.

Technology can accelerate ideas.

It can't replace relationships.

Curiosity Creates Better Design

One conversation, in particular, stayed with Randy.

Rather than encouraging firms to chase every emerging technology, one presenter challenged attendees to slow down and first define the problem they were trying to solve.

It was a reminder that good design has never been about having the newest tools—it's about asking better questions.

That same mindset applies to architecture and interior design.

"Firms can no longer simply do things like they did last year—or sometimes even last month. Flexibility and adaptability are the new norm and will be ongoing and constant. Creating ways to keep all staff members trained and up to date will be key." Randy Henrie, Senior Associate & Senior Architect

Max sees that adaptability as an essential part of being a designer.

"The design world is ever-changing. Trends come and go, desires shift, and needs change. Learning new things enables us to adapt; it establishes new ways for us to think about problems and solutions to create better projects for our clients and community." — Max Hemmy

Better Learning Creates Better Outcomes

For clients, professional development isn't an abstract idea.

It directly influences the quality of the design process.

As Randy explains,

"On the design side, new technologies allow rapid exploration of multiple ideas in a very short amount of time, with the goal of finding the optimal solution. On the production side, when harnessed properly, coordination, code compliance, and QA/QC can be more efficient and accurate." — Randy Henrie

Those efficiencies create more opportunities to explore ideas, improve coordination, and spend more time focused on thoughtful design.

Max sees that potential, too.

"It allows us to be more innovative and flexible. Leveraging a different set of tools will create results that previous technologies could not." — Max Hemmy

For clients throughout Aspen, the Roaring Fork Valley, and beyond Colorado, that means working with a team committed to improving—not simply maintaining—the way we practice architecture and interior design.

Look Ahead

After three days of conversations about artificial intelligence, emerging technology, and the future of architecture, Randy and Max returned with a surprising conclusion.

The future isn't defined by technology alone.

It's defined by the people willing to keep learning.

"It helps us stay relevant and keeps us forward-thinking. Being too focused on prior ways of creating would keep us from innovating." — Max Hemmy

For Randy, the conference reinforced that Z Group is already moving in the right direction.

"Overwhelming in how rapidly the industry is changing, challenging and exciting to understand what is next, confirming that Z Group is already making steps to stride into the future." — Randy Henrie

For more than 70 years, Z Group has embraced change without losing sight of what matters most.

Some of the tools we use will continue to evolve.

Our responsibility won't.

Every project still begins the same way it always has—with listening, collaboration, and a commitment to designing places that improve the lives of the people who inhabit them.

After more than seven decades, that's one thing we've never stopped learning.

How Artificial Intelligence Is Shaping Architecture & Interior Design—and What It Means for Our Clients

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is continuing education important for architects and interior designers?

Architecture and interior design are constantly evolving as new building technologies, materials, sustainability standards, building codes, and digital tools emerge. Continuing education helps designers stay current with industry best practices, improve collaboration, and explore new ways to solve design challenges. At Z Group Architecture & Interior Design, lifelong learning is part of our commitment to delivering thoughtful, innovative solutions for every client.

When architects and interior designers continue learning, clients benefit from improved design processes, better project coordination, more efficient workflows, and access to the latest industry knowledge. Professional development also helps architects evaluate new technologies while ensuring every design decision remains focused on the client's goals, lifestyle, and long-term vision.

No. Artificial intelligence is becoming a valuable tool within the design profession, but it cannot replace the creativity, critical thinking, technical expertise, or human relationships that architects bring to every project. At Z Group, we see AI as one of many tools that can support design exploration and efficiency while keeping people at the center of the design process.

Founded in Aspen in 1952, Z Group has embraced every major evolution in architectural practice—from hand drafting and computer-aided design to sustainable building strategies and today's emerging technologies. Our team invests in continuing education, industry conferences, collaboration, and research so we can combine decades of experience with forward-thinking design solutions for our clients.

Industry conferences allow architects to exchange ideas with peers, explore emerging technologies, learn from industry leaders, and better understand changing trends within architecture and interior design. Bringing those insights back to the studio helps create stronger collaboration, more informed design decisions, and better outcomes for clients.

Technology allows architects to evaluate multiple design concepts more efficiently, improve communication among project teams, enhance quality control, and streamline documentation. While technology can improve efficiency, successful projects still rely on thoughtful collaboration, creativity, and a deep understanding of each client's goals.

Innovation at Z Group has never been about chasing trends. Instead, we thoughtfully evaluate new technologies and design approaches that genuinely improve the client experience and project outcomes. Our goal is to create architecture and interior design that feels timeless, responds to its environment, and serves our clients for generations.

Z Group Architecture & Interior Design has been serving Aspen and Western Colorado since 1952, making us Aspen's longest-standing architecture firm. Our longevity reflects more than experience; it reflects our commitment to evolving with the profession while staying true to our core values. We invest in continuing education, sustainable design practices, emerging technologies, and collaborative relationships so every project benefits from both proven expertise and fresh thinking. Whether designing custom homes, hospitality destinations, commercial spaces, or community projects, our focus remains the same: creating architecture that is thoughtful, enduring, and deeply connected to the people and places it serves.
