A New Vision Above Aspen
Poised high above Aspen, Tabula Rasa Residence is a study in renewal and restraint—a contemporary home that redefines what it means to live in harmony with the mountain. Designed by Z Group Architecture & Interior Design, this 5,750-square-foot, three-level residence unfolds along a steep hillside, its form cascading naturally with the terrain. The architecture captures sweeping alpine views through floor-to-ceiling glass walls and expansive terraces, dissolving boundaries between the built and natural worlds.
Rooted in the concept of a “blank slate,” the home’s design embraces clarity and calm. Simple geometric volumes, softened by ship-lap wood siding, board-form concrete, and steel accents, ground the structure in the landscape while creating a dialogue between texture, shadow, and light.

Architecture That Belongs to the Land
The steep site became both inspiration and framework. By layering the home into the hillside, the design maximizes privacy while ensuring that every level opens directly to the outdoors. The result is a composition that feels at once anchored and open—a residence that grows from the mountain rather than resting on it.
Inside, an open floor plan blurs distinctions between living, dining, and kitchen areas. Natural materials—wood ceilings, stone surfaces, and glass partitions—create a continuous visual flow that extends to generous decks and a lower spa terrace. The main living level includes five bedrooms, five full baths, and a powder room, offering both intimacy and expansive communal gathering spaces.

Where Modern Design Meets Mountain Living
Each moment in Tabula Rasa is shaped by connection—to light, to landscape, and to the rhythms of everyday life. A two-car garage and carefully concealed mechanical spaces balance the home’s precision with practical livability, while green roofs and energy-efficient systems tie the architecture to its natural setting. The upper terraces serve as outdoor living rooms—places for reflection, dining, and stargazing—framed by uninterrupted views of Aspen’s rolling valleys and snowcapped peaks.
Inside, the palette is deliberately quiet. Warm tones of wood, soft stone, and matte finishes allow sunlight and scenery to take precedence. This is a home for retreat and renewal—a modern interpretation of mountain tranquility.
A Contemporary Canvas in the Mountains
Currently in design, Tabula Rasa Residence is a study in restraint and precision—architecture stripped to its essentials, allowing the surrounding beauty of Aspen’s landscape to take center stage. The home’s elevated terraces, green roof systems, and natural material palette create a sustainable and timeless connection to place.
“This project began as an idea of renewal—a home that feels grounded yet forward-looking, where design and landscape work as one continuous experience.” — Scott McHale, Principal & Director of Design
