Designed by Z Group Architecture & Interior Design, this 2,700-square-foot, four-bedroom, four-bath mountain residence reimagines a dated Aspen home into a modern sanctuary of metal, stone, and wood.
Perched on a secluded 0.34-acre lot, Novo Ferrum stands as a dialogue between permanence and change. Its very name evokes the alchemy of renewal—the process by which raw elements, under time and pressure, evolve into something more beautiful and resilient. The home’s new form celebrates this same evolution, forging a fresh architectural identity from the framework of the past.
Architecture That Evolves With Its Environment
The design transformation begins at the exterior, where weathering steel panels, natural stone, and warm cedar cladding define the home’s new character. Over time, the steel façade oxidizes, transitioning from silver-gray to deep rust tones—mirroring the seasonal shifts of Aspen’s rugged landscape.
This is not simply a renovation, it’s a redefinition. Z Group reoriented the building’s geometry to open it to sunlight and views, while integrating expansive glass openings and modern decks that dissolve the barrier between interior and landscape. Every elevation responds to its site, ensuring that Novo Ferrum doesn’t compete with its environment; it becomes part of it.
A Complete Interior Renewal
Inside, the contrast between old and new is striking. Once dark, compartmentalized rooms have been transformed into open, light-filled spaces that feel both intimate and expansive. A floating steel staircase anchors the multi-level layout, connecting a bright, open-concept kitchen and dining area to the upper living zones.
Natural textures play a vital role in softening the contemporary structure. Stone feature walls, textured tile backsplashes, and warm wood ceilings add depth and tactility, while clean lines and minimalist detailing provide visual calm. The balance between raw materials and refined finishes reflects the project’s guiding concept: strength expressed through simplicity.
Throughout the 2,700 square feet, strategically placed windows frame views of the surrounding forest and mountains, infusing every space with natural light and a connection to place. Bedrooms are oriented toward privacy and morning light, while living spaces open outward extending seamlessly to the home’s new decks and outdoor terraces.
