Interior Design for Connection & Collaboration
Located within The River Lofts at Basalt River Park, CMC Morgridge Commons is a flexible educational and community environment designed for Colorado Mountain College and the greater Roaring Fork Valley. Z Group approached the interiors with a clear purpose: create a welcoming, adaptable setting where people can learn, meet, exchange ideas, and connect.
Rather than feeling like a traditional institutional space, the interior is open and approachable. A restrained material palette, flexible furnishings, integrated technology, natural light, and views toward the surrounding mountains create a contemporary environment that supports everything from classroom-style learning to nonprofit meetings and community gatherings.

Positioned between Colorado Mountain College’s Aspen and Carbondale campuses, the space reflects the character of its role within the valley—connected, flexible, and distinctly of its place.
Interior Design Narrative & Strategic Vision
The interior design began with the idea that one space should support many ways of gathering.
The main meeting room is intentionally flexible. Mobile tables and seating can be reconfigured for presentations, classroom settings, collaborative sessions, or smaller group conversations. Large-format displays and video-conferencing technology are integrated into the room without dominating it, keeping the space visually calm while supporting hybrid learning and communication.
Overhead exposed structural and mechanical systems give the larger room a clean, contemporary character. Linear suspended lighting reinforces the open geometry, while a quiet palette of white, gray, and warm neutrals allows daylight and views to become part of the interior composition.
The result is an educational interior that feels purposeful without feeling institutional.

Interior Design Highlights
Flexibility, technology, and human comfort shape the Morgridge Commons experience.
Key interior features include:
Flexible meeting environments with mobile tables and seating, including a 1,000-square-foot main room accommodating up to 28 people and a six-person conference room
Integrated technology with video conferencing and large-format displays supporting presentations, hybrid meetings, and collaborative learning
Contemporary exposed ceilings and linear lighting that reinforce the open character and architectural rhythm of the main gathering space
Warm wood, textured flooring, and a restrained material palette balancing contemporary simplicity with comfort and natural character
Generous daylight and mountain views connecting the interior experience to downtown Basalt and the surrounding Roaring Fork Valley landscape
Together, these elements create an adaptable interior that transitions easily between education, professional collaboration, and community use.
Materiality, Light & Place
The interior palette is deliberately understated. White walls and exposed ceiling systems create brightness and visual continuity, while warm wood, textured flooring, and blue accents add depth without competing with the activities within the rooms.
The smaller conference room offers a contrasting experience. A wood-clad ceiling lowers the perceived scale and adds warmth, creating a more intimate setting for conversation. Artwork introduces another layer of color and regional character while integrated technology maintains the room’s professional functionality.
In the main gathering space, expansive windows frame views toward Basalt and the surrounding mountains. Daylight becomes an important interior material, connecting a highly functional educational environment to the landscape beyond.
That relationship between interior, community, and place is central to the project.
Flexible Space, Shared Purpose
CMC Morgridge Commons demonstrates how thoughtful interior design can make a relatively compact footprint work harder.
Spaces are designed not around a single prescribed use, but around changing activity patterns. Furniture moves. Groups expand and contract. Technology connects people inside and outside the room. Smaller spaces provide focus while the primary gathering room supports larger conversations.
For Colorado Mountain College, the result is an interior that extends learning beyond a conventional classroom. For Basalt and the greater Roaring Fork Valley, it creates an adaptable community resource where education, civic engagement, professional collaboration, and conversation can intersect.
Morgridge Commons transforms flexibility into hospitality—creating an interior where people, ideas, and community can come together.
