Where Community and Culture Meet Design
Located just below Cooper Avenue in the heart of the Aspen Core, Buck — short for Bar Under Cooper and Kitchen — is a vibrant hospitality space that celebrates both Aspen’s storied past and its contemporary mountain spirit. Designed by Z Group Architecture & Interior Design, Buck reimagines a below‑grade bar and kitchen environment into an energetic, warm, and memorable destination where locals, visitors, and après enthusiasts converge.
This project highlights Z Group’s ability to craft spaces that are not only functional and compelling but also deeply rooted in local heritage and emotional connection.

Design Narrative & Hospitality Identity
Buck’s design is a thoughtful blend of heritage, texture, and place‑based storytelling. The architectural centerpiece is a custom ski wall — a rhythmic and visually striking installation that reflects Aspen’s alpine culture and outdoor legacy. This layering of narrative and material anchors the space and gives guests an immediate sense of belonging — as though they’ve stepped into a contemporary lodge with deep historic memory.
The carefully curated interior palette expresses a balance of rugged and refined, where timeless memory meets modern hospitality. Reclaimed elements from Aspen institutions — including tables salvaged from the historic Red Onion and stained‑glass windows revived from the Crystal Palace — imbue the design with character and authenticity. A stone gabion wall provides tactile contrast, marrying organic texture with warm finishes and thoughtful lighting.
“We wanted Buck to feel instantly familiar — like you’ve been coming here for years,” says Katie Hmielowski, Project Manager & Architectural Designer. “That meant crafting warmth through material memory and mountain rhythm — architecture that responds to Aspen’s lifestyle.”
This sense of “familiar yet new” is critical to Buck’s success as a space that invites conversation, connection, and celebration — whether for après‑ski gatherings, dinner with friends, or late‑night socializing.

Hospitality Experience & Spatial Flow
The interior layout responds to the dual needs of energetic nightlife and casual dining. Thoughtful spatial planning accommodates both high‑energy bar moments and intimate dining experiences. From the lively bar with storytelling ski motifs to cozy booth seating and flexible table arrangements, each zone supports differing moods and moments throughout the day and evening.
Material & Spatial Highlights
Custom ski wall installation as a narrative anchor
Reclaimed stained glass from Crystal Palace, adding color and historic layering
Tables laminated with vintage ski passes — a direct connection to Aspen’s outdoor culture
Stone gabion wall for organic texture and contrast
Warm timber, burnished metal, and layered lighting to foster a hospitality atmosphere
Acoustics and lighting designed to support both conversation and ambiance
All elements contribute to a holistic hospitality experience — where dining, drinking, gathering, and storytelling coexist fluidly.
Recognition
While not a residential design, the Design Workshop Basalt Office demonstrates Z Group’s breadth in creating interior environments that resonate with users and bridge architectural excellence with human‑centric design. The project underscores the firm’s ability to translate clients' aspirations into spaces that function intuitively, express brand identity, and foster connection.
This project contributes to Z Group’s growing recognition for design excellence across disciplines—residential, commercial, workplace, and hospitality.
